Is Chivalry Sexist?

I've taken to answering questions emailed to me by friends, and I'm going to name that the "Dear Harlem Diva" section of my blog. Today's post comes from  "Kenneth".

Dear Harlem Diva,

Is chivalry sexist? I try to do things that I think a man will do for his woman, hold the door, take care of her, and do the things I think a man should do for his woman. She insists on being an "independent" woman, not needing man for anything. What does she need me for then?

Reply:

This is an excellent question. More and more women are striving for equality, and with that, they want to prove that they are on equal plane with men, with the ability to take care of their own needs without the help of men. This is perfectly OK,until you figure out that the way you've been raised, and your "masculine" values are becoming more and more useless when dealing with that particular woman. My advice to you would be to explain to that woman your values, tell her you respect hers, and try to reach a compromise. If she can't 'get it'....kick her to the curb. Problem solved!

Interview with "Art Takes Time Square" artist Rushane Bennett

The Harlem Diva LOVES art work.

It's important to me to see fresh, new, up-and-coming artists. Rushane Bennett, (hailing from Portmore, Jamaica, currently residing in Bronx, NY) is one of those brilliant young artists. At the ripe young age of 21, he has been able to transform his artwork from basic sketching (which he calls "doodles"), to mastering graphic art, and recently he began working with water color and oil based paints to create wonderful artwork that truly moves the soul.

Rushane's work was recently showcased at "Art Takes Time Square" in New York City. Here is his work being showcased at the VIP After Party!

Out of thousands of entries, his work was one of those selected to be showcased in the event!

I had the opportunity to interview Rushane, and when I asked him what inspired him, he explained to me that his "family and his past artistic pieces are inspiration to him. He is also inspired by other young up and coming artists. He said "I know I can be better than what I limit myself to, and I always try to break that barrier". He is definitely an inspiration to those who want to challenge themselves to do what they know they are fully capable of!

Rushane says that the "love of art pushes me to do better", and you can definitely see the passion he has for his pieces within the work.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces by Rushane Bennett:

This piece is so colorful and vibrant, yet the eyes tell a story of struggle. Absolutely beautiful.

This pop art is so juicy. Those passionate purple lips just please my soul!

This is one of the first water-color paintings Rushane created...so vibrant, yet so reflective. Did I mention that this was one of his "first" water color paintings.....I'm impressed with his ability to use the paint in such a beautiful way when just starting out with it....

Rushane has created two personal pieces for me that I will use as illustrations in my new book! I am so in love with them, and can't wait to share them with everyone!

Rushane is one of those artists you just can't forget! I can't wait to see his artwork showcased in his own art studio!

Rushane can be contacted on Facebook at the following address: rushane.bennett@facebook.com

Harlem Diva Enjoys A Taste of Turkey....

Recently, i've been to some great restaurants, and i'd like to share my experiences. The first location I went to last weekend was an authentic Turkish restaurant right in the heart of Midtown East in Manhattan called "Sip Sak" on 49th and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. The exact address is 928 2nd Avenue, New York, NY  10022.
The ambiance was nice, and the place had a family style dinner feel. It was very close knit, and I was a little overwhelmed by how attentive the wait staff was in taking my order. They made me feel comfortable and eager to order.

I started my meal off with an appetizer of  stuffed grape leaves, filled with rice, pine nuts and raisins, which were absolutely delicious. Afterwards, I continued my meal with my main entree, Grilled Shrimp with Rice Pilaf, Sauteed Red Cabbage, and Veggies. The main course was so delicious. The rice had distinctive lemon undertones that reminded me of a Greek style meal. I was informed by the waiter that many dishes served in Greek are Mediterranean style dishes which originated from Turkey.

Afterwards, I had Pistachio and nut Baklava, and some homemade Turkish Ice-cream that was amazing!

I definitely love the variety of tastes and textures in the food. I will definitely be going to this restaurant again!
